Manual Upgrades

User Problem

Enterprise users require greater control over the application update process for Plotly Studio. The current automatic update mechanism, which checks and applies upgrades every time the product starts, often conflicts with enterprise IT policies requiring prior approval for software installations. This can lead to the application becoming temporarily unusable for users until they secure the necessary IT approvals.

What is it?

This feature is a managed, non-auto-updating version of Plotly Studio designed specifically for enterprise environments. This version will operate identically to the standard Plotly Studio but will disable the automatic update check and application process upon startup. It provides enterprises with a stable version that remains static until they choose to manually initiate an upgrade.

What does it allow users to do?

This feature allows users and their organizations to:

  • Maintain Application Access and Stability: Users can continue to use Plotly Studio without interruption, avoiding the lockout or broken state that occurs when an unauthorized automatic update is detected.

  • Coordinate Upgrades Centrally: Enterprise IT administrators can manage and synchronize the deployment of new Plotly Studio versions across their entire user base. They can perform all necessary testing and secure IT approvals once, then push the update to all users simultaneously at a scheduled time.

  • Align with IT Governance: The product will adhere to strict enterprise IT policies that mandate manual, approved installation of software updates, giving the organization full control over their software lifecycle management.
